Leo Season Magic: Big Main Character Energy

LION: [stares at audience until applause stops] Welcome to Leo Season.

The Lion of Leo symbolizes strength, leadership, courage, pride, and confidence. The energy of this sign is passionate, positive, and prosperous, ruled by the Sun and the element of fire. It’s a vibe shift well needed after a water season that pushed our deepest truths to the surface and challenged us to face and process them. The emotional spring of Cancer has slowed to a gurgle for another year and those swollen rivers have emptied out into the seas. Now, the Moon yields her throne to the Sun and we move from Water to Fire. So dry your tears, Sea Witches, and get ready to roar with our founder like it’s your birthday, too!

Sea Witch Botanicals’ master crafter Alesia Hall turns another year awesome-er on August 1st, so we’re kicking off Leo season with some advice inspired by the Queen Lion herself to get you prepared. 

Here’s how we’re hitching a ride with the apex predator this season:

Challenge Imposter Syndrome

Whether Alesia likes it or not, she’s the main character. She puts the Sea Witch in the Botanicals! She’s the founder, owner, and master crafter of this incredible, ethical company, and all of those intoxicating scent blends and soothing skin care products you love came from her mind and heart. That doesn’t mean she feels like a boss all the time, though. 

It’s normal to have moments of self-doubt, but when “Imposter Syndrome” takes over Pride Rock, it’s time to get mindful and challenge those automatic negative thoughts. When our founder struggles to accept praise or gets hung up on perfectionism, even she sometimes needs a friend to remind her that she’s exactly where she needs to be, doing exactly what she is meant to do. 

I cherish this quote from Martha Graham, and hope that you feel the truth of it, too:

Try New Things AND LET YOURSELF SUCK AT THEM

The ego functions to steer us clear of potential emotional pain, jumping in to spin and censor our thoughts and behaviors to protect us from social rejection, even from ourselves. But it gets in the way of our growth so it needs to hush up sometimes! 

This season, give yourself permission to suck at things like no one is watching. Take up a new hobby or give yourself another go at one you abandoned when it didn’t come quickly enough the first time. There is literally no shame in not being expertly adept at something new! And there is nothing like the peace and confidence that comes with freeing ourselves from other people’s perceptions and opinions.

During Leo season, we’re all under the influence of Leo’s ruling astral body, which is our own Sun. That means we all get a little boost of winning energy, so now is the time to take some chances!

Master the Inferno

The fire of passion that burns at the heart of Leo can be an incredible motivator and manifestation fuel, but it can also be a destructive force. It can inspire creativity, drive, and optimism, keeping stamina stoked for the follow-through. It can be the warm hand of the Sun upon your shoulder, steady like a mentor who believes in you, that gives you the push you need to speak up, take the risk, or make the leap. 

But under the wrong conditions, that fire can escape your control. Deployed in anger or haste, it can cause irreparable harm. Under pressure, it can explode. It can scorch the Earth and destroy entire relationships, so wield that energy with great care. 

There is no small existence. There is no life that does not touch any others.

In the words of Octavia Butler’s protagonist in Parable of the Sower, "All that you touch, you Change."

Everything you do affects the world around you, so consider: what kind of changes do you want to make by existing? Don’t let the fire of this season run wild with malice or greed. Allow this fire to refine your intentions and define your motivations. Let this fire spread only love. 

Shake that Glorious Mane

Do not confuse confidence with cockiness or self esteem with narcissism. There exists a vast and expansive dimension between self loathing and getting frozen to a lake because you can’t tear your eyes off your own reflection, and there is enough space in that dimension for humility and self-acceptance to co-exist in you. 

You are allowed to think you’re beautiful, and you’re allowed to know your worth. You are allowed to feel good about yourself, and you’re allowed to accept positive feedback without deflecting it. You’re allowed to take as many selfies as you want and then pick the very best one and post it, and you’re allowed to enjoy every hit of dopamine from the feedback. 

You’re allowed to call yourself what you are without gatekeeping yourself. If you write, you’re a writer. If you run a business, you’re a boss. If you make art, you are an artist. You are not an imposter. You’re gloriously, magnanimously YOU, and there is no one else who can do exactly what you do in this world. 

Don't underestimate yourselves, Sea Witches, and take credit where credit is due! May you know your worth, now and always. And may you all feel the smolder this season, as you do your little turn on the catwalk.
