Can you imagine a world without blue whales, chimpanzees, or green turtles? These are just three of nearly 16,000 endangered species today, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They report that more than 27,000 species are threatened with extinction. To bring national awareness, May 17th is Endangered Species Day. This day hits home to us and so many others because it's a day to recognize the urgency of protecting endangered species.
When species become endangered it indicates there is an imbalance in the ecosystem. This is devastating to the entire ecosystem because when one species is lost, it becomes increasingly hard for others to survive. And without a well-balanced ecosystem, human health is also degraded because the planet's air, water, and land are not being purified efficiently.
Here are 3 actions you can take to help:
- Find local organizations in your community that help wildlife conservation and volunteer with them! This can look like restoring habitat, cleaning up our environment at work parties, and seeking outreach opportunities to spread urgency. Volunteermatch.org is a great resource because it sends email alerts for new opportunities in your area.
- Take sustainable measures in your everyday life by mixing in alternative transportation into your weekly outings, cutting down on single-use packaging and plastics, and supporting local companies.
- Vote with your dollar by purchasing from brands that transparently communicate their social and environmental impacts. And remember that your dollar goes farther in your local economy. Learn more about why we became a B-Corp.
Our Company's Impact:
We're raising awareness of our endangered marine ecosystem by bringing you a Limited Edition Print Soap Collection: Endangered Species, featuring local artist Jill Bliss' fantastic artwork. For every bar sold, we're donating $1 to the non-profit Oceana, which serves to make our oceans more biodiverse and abundant by winning policy victories in the countries that govern much of the world's marine life.
Oceana speaks to our mission of protecting the world's waterways. And since 2001, they have achieved hundreds of international policy victories for marine life and habitat. Some of these include stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas, protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing gear, and helping countries phase out single-use plastics.
